Picnic Month 2021

Picnic Month

The truth is many of us have been socialized to think that if we are not the very best, if we are not at the top 1 percent of whatever it is we do, then we are not good enough. To reinforce this already pervasive mental model, society has established a competitive hierarchy for just about everything.

Elizabeth Thornton

When the weather gets warmer and the rains of spring have abated, the outdoors are beckoning all those adventurous families who are out to have fun in the sun. Local parks have finally come out from under the pall of cloud gray skies, and picnics can begin in earnest!

Sausage rolls and Fried Chicken, Fresh Fruit and Lemonade, these are the hallmarks of a great meal out of doors. National Picnic Month encourages you to get out and celebrate the warm summer days and find your love and wonder of the outdoors again while enjoying some great food!

History of Picnic Month

Throughout the recorded history of civilization, there has always been something special about leaving the stuffy confines of your home and eating a meal outdoors. We know there’s a beautiful world out there waiting for us to come visit it, and when summer comes around we’re reminded just how much time we’ve been locked inside or being eager to come in from the cold. The word ‘picnic’ is thought to have first been used by Tony Willis in 1692, and from that point forward everyone from the working class to the upper crust have been fascinated with taking their repast outside under the sky.

Picnics have been used for many things throughout the centuries, from a simply family gathering spent enjoying the outdoors, to being used as a peaceful protest in the Pan-European Picnic, which was held on the Hungarian/Austrian border in 1989. The most notable, and largest, picnic ever held spanned 600 miles, crossing France from coast to coast and celebrated the millennium’s first Bastille Day in 2000. Such a diverse resume for such a simple concept, don’t you think? Picnic Month celebrates the history of this activity and the way it has been used to bring families, countries, and all humanity together.

How to celebrate Picnic Month

Picnic month is exceptionally easy to celebrate! You just have to get outside into the world and enjoy all the wonderful sights and smells it has to offer. World Watercolor Month

Art has been an expression of the human soul, and a salve for the same, since time out of mind. One of the most ancient art forms is watercolor painting, and World Watercolor Month celebrates it and encourages everyone to give it a try!

History of World Watercolor Month

World Watercolor Month was founded by Charlie O’Shields, creator of Doodlewash®. He realized after looking at the yearly calendar that of all the forms of art that had a day or month dedicated to them, watercolor was just plain left out!

Through his efforts, July was established as World Watercolor Month once and for all! Watercolor painting has a history stretching back to pre-history, with the earliest examples gracing the cave walls where ancient man used to live. Since that time art has played an important role in our society, bringing us together, inspiring us, and lifting our hearts during our darkest days.

It has also played an important part in education, serving to help bring equality to areas and topics typically impacted by socioeconomic boundaries. How odd is it then that art classes are one of the first sacrifices when budget cuts come along for our educational institutions?

Doodlewash turned its efforts to combating this trend by partnering with The Dreaming Zebra Foundation to provide awareness to those young men and women who may otherwise not be able to develop their artistic creativity. Even better Dreaming Zebra has created a whole new type of recycling, art & music supply recycling! They gather up gently used art and music supplies and return them to people in need.

How To Celebrate World Watercolor Month

Celebrating World Watercolor Month is easy! Just head out to your local art supply store and pick up a container of watercolor paints and something to paint on and put your creativity to the test. Once you’ve created your masterpiece, post it online with the hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth. Next, it’s time to help by donating to The Dreaming Zebra Foundation to help children across the world reach their artistic potential, just 10$ ensures that a child gets art supplies!

Guinea Pig Appreciation Day 2021

Guinea Pig Appreciation Day

When people ask how have I kept on top, I have to say with the help of every photographer, make-up artist and hairdresser I’ve ever worked with.

Linda Evangelista

As far as small fuzzies go, the Guinea Pig is certainly one of the world’s favorites. Having been domesticated in South America for thousands of years, they’re one of the longest-serving companions to humans and today are the pet of choice for many children and adults alike. With their soft squishy bodies, cute little ears and their easy-going demeanor, if you’re looking for a cuddly companion you can’t go far wrong.

To keep the love of guinea pigs alive, Guinea Pig Appreciation Day celebrates everything that we love about these cutesy critters and celebrates just what it is that makes them great pets.

History of Guinea Pig Appreciation Day

We first started domesticating the humble guinea pig as far back as 5000BC, when they were usually kept as livestock. In Europe, they became known as exotic pets when traders brought them to the UK in the 1500s, with even royalty being keen to keep them.

Throughout the years, we have bred many different breeds of guinea pigs – from breeds with long lush coats that need trimming frequently, to piggies with no hair at all!

No matter the breed, one thing they all have in common is their love of veggies – guinea pigs thrive off leafy veg and fruit, and since they are generally healthy animals they don’t usually need a large amount of veterinary care. Because their teeth grow continuously, however, they need hay in their diet so that they keep their chompers worn down.

Guinea pigs are very social animals, and any piggie parent will tell you that they should always be kept in pairs or groups.

How to celebrate Guinea Pig Appreciation Day

If you’ve been thinking of getting a pet, why not think about getting a couple of guinea pigs today? If you already have some piggies of your own, make sure you give them some special treats today – fresh green vegetables are their favorite!

Piggies need quite a lot of space in their cage – a minimum of 8 square feet of floor space – so bear that in mind if you pop along to buy a cage. It’s not uncommon to find cages in pet shops being sold for guinea pigs which are actually far too small, so be careful to choose the right one.

Same sex pairs must be kept together, or if you want a boy and a girl they must be spayed or neutered. Guinea pigs don’t wait very long into their lives before they start mating, and are ready to reproduce from as young as 4 weeks old!

And remember, if you do decide to buy or adopt a guinea pig, they will need your love and care for a few years – these hardy creatures live on average between 5 and 8 years. The oldest piggie on record, named Snowball, died in 1979 at the grand old age of 15!

Plastic Free July 2021

Plastic Free July

It’s hard to find logic in things sometimes. That’s why I can’t analyze things too much, because it often doesn’t make much sense.

Tim Burton

Recycling is emphasized everywhere, but there’s not enough holiday to indeed enforce the idea of how easy it is to recycle. When it comes to plastic, plastic has become the number one product people use each day, despite how damaging it is to the environment. Plastic Free July is a holiday dedicated to teaching people about the dangers of plastic and challenges people to avoid plastic for a month. Read more to learn about its history and see how you can get started.

History of Plastic Free July

Beginning with just a handful of participants in Western Australia back in 2011, the holiday idea has since grown into its own independent, non-profit organization and an annual event in over 150 countries. They originally began through the organization Earth Carers, a community that focuses on a wide range of environmental issues in the world and educates people about the consequences of hurting the environment. Their vision, after separating and becoming their own organization, is all about a world without plastic waste, and many people caught on to the message they sent out because of their concerns for plastic waste across the globe.

Hence, Plastic Free July is all about encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use and creating a cleaner world as a result. People can participate in this holiday by avoiding all products that use plastic products in them throughout the whole month of July. This holiday also helps educate people about the different types of plastics out there and what happens in the recycling system when plastic is introduced. This initiative aims to challenge the material system the world has in place when it comes to its economy, focusing its efforts on a global span as well as a personal one. By reducing how much a person uses, they can make a small difference and help others do the same.

How to celebrate Plastic Free July

Begin by avoiding single-use plastic such as straws, water bottles, and plastic produce bags. Use more reusable products such as glass jars, metal utensils, and use metal tin lunch boxes and containers for storage. Avoid highly processed foods and begin using homemade recipes. Learn how to make your products like toothpaste, deodorant, and mouthwash. Share this holiday to your friends online by using the hashtag #plasticfreejuly and see if you can convince them to join you in your efforts to stop using plastic.
